BREIN Is Targeting Pirate Media Player Vendors
The European Court of Justice has recently ruled that TV boxes can infringe copyright if they are shipped loaded with pirating software. The Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN was quick to use this decision and pressure pirate media player vendors to cease their sales or risk tens of thousands of euros in fines.
How to Handle a Copyright Infringement Letter
Are you downloading songs, movies or TV shows?

Your Internet Service Provider knows your IP address and can send Copyright Infringement Notice to you soon. So, what should you do if you have just received a copyright infringement letter from your Internet Provider or government agency like RIAA, MPAA and other?

Here you can find the best tips:

Copyright Infringement letters should generally be ignored. If they can't confirm that you ever received the notice, they're even less likely to go after you.

If you have received a copyright infringement letter, don't respond to it, don't visit the website provided, ignore threats of lawsuits and settlement offers, and if you are actually distributing the material in question, stop immediately.

The best way to avoid such a notice is prevention and education. If you have a wireless router and it is not secured or password-protected, you need to lock it down immediately. If you run BitTorrent client or other sharing software, it is a great idea to check for material being offered for upload by the software and remove it.

RIAA, MPAA and other Government Agencies don’t have your email unless you give it to them by replying. They send a complaint to your ISP with ONLY your IP address and your ISP figures out who that IP belongs to, at what time and your ISP sends out an email accordingly (read more here - You Could Be Liable for $150k in Penalties Per Downloaded Song)
More Pirate Streaming Websites Are Targeted in Australia
A new case was launched by the Australian pay TV company Foxtel seeking to have major pirate streaming platforms blocked on the ISP level. It all started last year, when the local government introduced new law to allow pirate services to be blocked in the country. Soon after, a lawsuit was brought by a number of Hollywood studios, in result of which the Federal Court ordered Australian ISPs to block key torrent trackers and streaming portals, including The Pirate Bay.
6% of North American Households Use Pirated Kodi Devices
According to findings of the Canadian broadband management company Sandvine, nearly 9% of all North American households own at least one Kodi device. About 2/3 of them actively use pirate add-ons, which makes it millions of households in total.
Netflix Fights against “Orange is The New Black” Leaks
The streaming service is sending takedown requests in order to limit the visibility of the recent "Orange is The New Black" leaks as much as possible. It is known that Netflix directed one anti-piracy vendor to focus specifically on this series.
US Published New “Pirate Watchlist”
The Office of the US Trade Representative has published its yearly piracy watchlist officially named Special 301 Report. The document highlights countries failing to comply with the copyright protection standards of the United States. Apparently, the enforcement of IP rights is a priority for the Trump administration. In the report, Canada and Switzerland are listed among the two dozen of other countries.
Australia Develops New Copyright Safe Harbor Legislation
Back in March, Australia changed her mind on extending its copyright safe harbor provisions to include such platforms as Google, Facebook and YouTube. Now the topic is discussed again, and the Australian government has just announced a new consultation, which is intended to encourage the growth of the digital economy while protecting rights owners.
5m Brits Engaged in Illegal Streaming
According to the recent study, about 5m Brits are known to regularly stream TV content from unauthorized online services. The same study revealed that Kodi-powered devices and Android applications are especially popular with British users. Hundreds of thousands of pirates say they are canceling their official subscriptions.
Football Organization Asked Google to Take Down Facebook
The Premier League has sent another crazy takedown request to Google: the football organization demanded the search engine to take down Facebook's homepage. In its opinion, Facebook distributes copyright infringing content and should be removed from Google’s search results. The search engine has investigated the unusual DMCA request and decided to drop it, of course.
CloudFlare Ordered to Expose Details of Gay-Torrents Operator
CloudFlare has been ordered to expose the details of the operator of private torrent community Gay-Torrents.org. The DMCA-based request was filed by an adult company Flava Works, which threatened to sue Cloudflare if it fails to take action against Gay-Torrents.org.
